Venice Senior High School is a public secondary school located in Venice Boulevard, Los Angeles, California. First established in 1911, Venice serves grades 9 to 12 following a traditional single track school calendar. The school is part of Local District 3 of the Los Angeles Unified School District. Several elementary schools, including Beethoven Elementary School, Westminster Avenue Elementary School and Coeur d'Alene Avenue Elementary School, feed into Venice. Marina Del Rey Middle School, Daniel Webster Middle School and Mark Twain Middle School also feed into Venice. Westwood Driving School provides the school's driving instruction.


The "Home of the Gondoliers" is home to 3,210 students during the 2005-06 school year. The school's English-language newspaper is The Oarsman and its Spanish-language newspaper is El Heraldo Latino. The school's colors are blue and white.

History

1911 - Venice High was first established in 1911 when classes were held in an old lagoon bathhouse.

1933 - In March 10, the Long Beach earthquake dealt damage to the school, resulting to hastily conducted classes in tents for two years until a replacement school was built.

1935 - New, modern, and earthquake-resistant buildings were built which are still used by the school at present.

About the Neighborhood

Mar Vista is located near the center of LA's West Side. The city of Santa Monica lies to the northwest, West Los Angeles to the north, Palms to the northeast, Culver City to the east, Del Rey to the southeast, and Marina del Rey and Venice to the southwest. Its approximate boundaries are the city limits of Culver City and the San Diego Freeway (I-405) on the northeast, Culver Boulevard on the southeast, Walgrove Avenue (north of Washington Boulevard) and Lincoln Boulevard (south of Washington) on the southwest, and the Santa Monica City limits and the Santa Monica Freeway (I-10) on the northwest. Major thoroughfares through the district include Palms, Venice, Sawtelle, Inglewood, and Grand View Boulevards, McLaughlin, Barrington, Short, and Centinela Avenues, and Beethoven Street. Most of the district uses the 90066 ZIP code. The northern and southern portions of Mar Vista are separated by a narrow strip of Culver City around Washington Boulevard. That portion of Culver City is served by the Los Angeles 90066 post office in Mar Vista.

Westdale, the area around National Boulevard, while usually considered a part of Mar Vista, is sometimes thought of as a separate neighborhood.

Including the small portion of Culver City within its boundaries, ZIP 90066 had a population of 55,194 as of the U.S. Census of 2000. Racial composition was 60.8% white, 4.1% black, 1% Native American, 13.5% Asian or Pacific Islander, 15.2% some other race, and 5.5% two or more races; 33.2% of respondents of all races claimed Hispanic or Latino ethnicity. Per capita income was $26,532 and median family income was $51,822; 9.7% of families and 13.9% of individuals were below the federal poverty line.

School Trivia

Venice High School was used as the Rydell High School location for the movie Grease starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John. It was also used in other movies such as American History X, and Matchstick Men (a person who poses as character's daughter says she goes to school there in the movie), as well as in several music videos, including Britney Spears's international hit ...Baby One More Time, Bowling For Soup's "High School Never Ends", and Young MC's "Principal's Office". Venice is also in The Faders "No Sleep Tonight".
