Van Nuys Senior High School or simply known as VNHS, is a public secondary high school serving students in 9th through 12th grade levels. The school, with its campus situated in Cedros Avenue, Van Nuys, California, is part of Local District 2 of the Los Angeles Unified School District. Van Nuys follows a traditional single track school calendar and is also home to a Residential Program and three Magnet Programs: Math/Science, Performing Arts, and Medical. VNHS was opened in 1914 and serves several neighborhoods which include much of Van Nuys, portions of Sherman Oaks, Magnolia Woods, and Victory Park.


The "Home of the Wolves" housed 3,577 students in school year 2005-06. VNHS's population is a mix of students from various ethnicities, majority of which are Hispanic or Latino. 79% of these students participate in free or reduced-price lunch program; and of the 32% English language learners, 87% of them use Spanish as their home language.

History

1914 - Van Nuys High School opened as one of three high schools in the San Fernando Valley serving what was then a rural community.

2006 - In October, Panorama High School opened to relieve the overcrowding at Van Nuys High School.

About the Neighborhood

Van Nuys is a district in the San Fernando Valley region of the City of Los Angeles, California. The TV show Beverly Hills 90210 was filmed on a set in Van Nuys. Van Nuys is in the heart of the San Fernando Valley and home to about 100,000 people; the main thoroughfare, Van Nuys Boulevard, is noted for its car dealerships. It also functions similar to a "county seat" for the Valley, with its Government Center (Erwin Street Mall) containing a branch of the Los Angeles County Superior Court, Van Nuys police station, the Van Nuys offices for Los Angeles City Hall, Van Nuys State Office Building and a branch of the Los Angeles Public Library.

School Trivia

  • The campus was used as a location for the 1982 movie Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Ridgemont High's mascot in the movie was the same as Van Nuys High School--a wolf, which remains VNHS' mascot today.
  • The horror films Christine and Sleepwalkers, both written by Stephen King, were filmed at Van Nuys High School.
  • Other, more forgettable movies filmed at Van Nuys High include Kid 'n Play's Class Act and My Stepmother is an Alien (featuring Kim Basinger.)
  • The Pilot episode of The Wonder Years, and several episodes of Highway to Heaven, as was The Ramones' punk rock movie classic Rock 'n' Roll High School.
  • The music video of Vitamin C's Graduation song was filmed at Van Nuys High School.
  • An episode of Seventh Heaven was filmed at Van Nuys High School, as was an episode of Twin Peaks.
