South East High School, or simply SEHS, is a comprehensive four-year high school located in the southeast area of South Gate, California. Considered as one of the largest high schools in the city with its 26.6 acres in land, SEHS is one of the latest schools built in LAUSD. It serves grades 9 to 12 under a single track school calendar. Its establishment relieved the overcrowdness of neighboring schools including South Gate, Bell and Huntington Park High. The school campus houses state of the art instructional classrooms that include specialty performing arts and science rooms, an auditorium, gymnasium and various sports facilities.


As of school year 2005-06, the home of "The Jaguars" housed 2246 students, 99% of which are Hispanic/Latino. 91% of their students are participating in free or reduced-price lunch program; 32% of them are English language learners.

History

2005 - South East High School's construction on the site of the old General Motors plant in South Gate was completed.

The school was known as Southeast Area New High School #2 [2] prior to its opening. The school was the first public high school built in the South Gate area in 73 years. Included in the South East High School plan was a student store, health office, food service, cafeteria, auditorium, gymnasium, swimming pool, sports fields and administration offices.

Schedule

Students who attend South East High School are on a traditional schedule. They are off the entire summer, and have a short winter, Thanksgiving, and spring break within the year. The school operates on a semester calendar, with quarterly progress points.

South Gate, city (1990 pop. 86,284), Los Angeles co., S Calif., an industrial suburb of Los Angeles; inc. 1923. Among the city's manufactures are metal, electrical, paper, and rubber products; consumer goods; machinery; foods; chemicals; cutting tools; and furniture. The city's population increased significantly in the late 20th century.
