History

1869 - Isaac Lankershim, pictured here, and Isaac Newton Van Nuys organized the San Fernando Farm Homestead Association. Two years later, they purchased the southern half of the valley.

1888 - Lankershim’s first school teacher, Mary Crawford, began teaching children in a bunkhouse on Vineland Avenue, just south of Third Street (today’s Riverside Drive). The town of Lankershim passed a bond measure to begin construction of a permanent schoolhouse.

1889 - Construction on the Schoolhouse at Lankershim was completed.

1905 - The administration at the Schoolhouse at Lankershim was so progressive that it claimed to have the first Edison phonograph in the country used for educational purposes.

1923 - The town of Lankershim annexed itself to Los Angeles. The Schoolhouse at Lankershim became part of “Los Angeles City Schools.” This photo shows the construction of the auditorium building in September.

1927 - In order to capitalize on the recent success of the movie industry in Hollywood, the city of Lankershim changed its name to “North Hollywood.” Lankershim School still retains the original name of the town.

1938 - Student Norma Jean Baker won awards for track and field, and the high jump. At Lankershim she was known as “Norma Jean the jumping bean.” She later found fame as an actress. Today we remember her as Marilyn Monroe.
