Washington Irving Middle School (IMS) is a public middle school located in Estara Avenue, Los Angeles, California. Founded in 1937, Irving Middle School is part of Local District 4 of the Los Angeles Unified School District. It serves students enrolled in grades 6 to 8, following a traditional single track school calendar. IMS is made up of Smaller Learning Communities (SLC) which are based on grade levels (includes 6th Grade house, 7th Grade house, and 8th Grade house).

From the 2006 California Academic Performance Index (API) Base report, the school has an API score of 660, which corresponds to a state rank of 3 (1 is the lowest, 10 is the highest. The API Score is a number between 200 and 1000 that reflects a school’s or school district’s performance on statewide student assessments administered in 2006).

90% of IMS' school teachers have full teaching credentials while 7% have emergency credentials. They also average 14 years in teaching experience with 13 average years teaching in the district. As of 2005-06, there are no first year teachers at IMS... the school's average class size is 32 for grade 6, 30 for grade 7, and 29 for grade 8.


The student-staff ratios are as follows: 52 Students per paraprofessional staff, 168 Students per office/clerical staff, and 99 Students per other classified staff... 85% of the school's population are Hispanic or Latino, 7% are Filipino, 4% are Asian, 2% are White, 1% African American, while the rest (less than 1% each) are American Indian/Alaska Native and Pacific Islander.

History

1937 - Washington Irving Middle School was opened.

Washington Irving, to whom the school was named after, was one of the first American authors to win recognition in Europe as well as the United States. This lawter-businessman-US diplomat was best known for his short stories that include Rip Van WInkle, and The legend of Sleepy Hollow.
