The Fernangeles Elementary School is a public elementary school located in the new District 2, formerly the Polytechnic-North Hollywood Cluster in the north eastern portion of the East San Fernando Valley. Fernangeles is part of the Los Angeles Unified School District and is a charter member of the LEARN reform program in Los Angeles. Opened in 1946, the school offers pre-kindergarten through 5th grade education with classes that are both multi-age and traditional. Fernangeles is a large school, on a year-round calendar, with a population of approximately 66 faculty members and 1,100 students.


School Statistics


96% of Fernangeles Elementary's school teachers have full teaching credentials while 4% have emergenecy credentials. They also average 11 years in teaching experience, with an 11 average years teaching experience in the district. Only 4% of the Fernangeles faculty are first year teachers.


The school's average class size is 19 for kindergarten, 20 for grade 1, 17 for grade 2, 19 for grade 3, and 29 for both grades 4 and 5. The student-staff ratio is 41 Students per paraprofessional staff, 212 Students per office/clerical staff, and 88 Students per other classified staff.


The community has shifted over the last 10-15 years from a largely Anglo community to a predominantly Latino and immigrant community as majority of the school's enrollees, 96% that is, are Hispanic or Latino. The rest are White (1%), Filipino (1%), African American (< 1%), Asian (< 1%), and American Indian or Alaska Native (< 1%).

History

1946 - Fernangeles Elementary School opened.

1994 - Fernangeles Elementary became a Project MORE school.

1997 - Fernangeles applied for and received a Healthy Start-SB 620 Planning Grant.

1998 - Fernangeles applied for an Operational Grant as a member of the East Valley Healthy Start Consortium.
