Ralph Waldo Emerson Middle School is a public middle school located in Selby Avenue, Los Angeles, California. A member of the Los Angeles Unified School District, Emerson Middle School started operating in 1935, offering secondary education from 6th through 8th grade levels in a single track calendar year. The school was named in honor of Ralph Waldo Emerson who was an American author, poet, and philosopher. Emerson Middle School also offers special academic programs such as the Mathematics Engineering Science Academic program (MESA), the School for Advanced Studies (SAS), and the Individualized Honors Program(IHP). Only two schools in the district offer IHP, the other being Walter Reed Middle School in North Hollywood.
