Birmingham High School is a public coeducational high school in the neighbord/district of Lake Balboa in the city of Los Angeles, California. A member of the Los Angeles Unified School District, Birmingham HS was founded in 1953 as a 7-12 grade combined high school, and became solely a senior high school in 1963. The school currently serves over 4,000 students enrolled in 9th to 12th grade, from Lake Balboa, parts of Encino, and Amestoy Estates.


School Statistics


Birmingham Senior High's teachers garner an 87% full credential and a 5% emergency credential rating. Experience wise, Birmingham's faculty has an average rate of 9 year teaching experience, with only 11% of them being first year teachers.


The average class size is 30 for grade 9, 34 for grade 10, and 30 for both grades 11 and 12. The student staff ratio is 69 Students per paraprofessional staff, 220 Students per office/clerical staff, and 107 Students per other classified staff.


In terms of student ethnicity, majority of the Birmingham Patriots are of Hispanic/Latino descent (68%). Other ethnic backgrounds of students are White (17%), African American (9%), Asian (3%), Filipino (3%), American Indian/Alaskans (less than 1%), and Pacific Islander (less than 1%).

History

1943 - The US Government constructed an army hospital, the Birmingham General Hospital named in honor of General Henry Patrick Birmingham, on a land that was part of a 60-acre lima bean and carrot patch.

1947 - A swimming pool was built as a therapeutic and recreational aid for recovering veterans.

1948 - The hospital was closed.

Early 1950's - The site was acquired by Los Angeles City Schools in the early 1950s (for the token price of $1).

1953 - Birmingham Junior High School was founded on the old hospital site.

1956 - The school expanded into a six-year campus.

1963 - The northern part of the campus became William Mulholland Junior High School.

1984 - The ninth grade became a part of Birmingham High School in the fall semester when reconfiguration changed the enrollment to a grade 9-12 school.

1994 - The Communicatons Technology magnet high school was opened.

2004 - High Tech Charter High School opens on the south side of campus replacing the five unused vocational shop buildings.

2000-2004 - The interior and exterior of all campus buildings, arcades, and walls were repainted.

2004 - Birmingham opens the High Tech High-Los Angeles.
