Belmont Senior High School is a public high school located at 1575 West 2nd Street in Downtown Los Angeles. A member school of the Los Angeles Unified School District, Belmont opened in 1923 and has since served a growing population of students from grades 9 through 12, following a three track calendar year. Belmont High School has the distinction of being the largest public school in the city of Los Angeles and the largest school in California, due to the density of the Westlake district, which it serves. Belmont High School's colors are green and black, and their teams are called the Sentinels.


School Statistics


The Belmont faculty has a full credential of 89% rating, and an emergency credential of 3%. The average teaching experience for Belmont teachers is 10 years, while their average teaching experience in the district is likewise 10 years. Only 10% of the teachers are on their first year of teaching.

History

1923 - Belmont High School opened.

1990's and 2000s - LAUSD tried to devise plans to relieve Belmont of many of its students

2006 - The Miguel Contreras Learning Complex opened and relieved Belmont.

by 2008 - Two high schools, Central Los Angeles Area High School 9 and Central Los Angeles High School 11 (Belmont Learning Center), will open and relieve Belmont.

by 2009 - Central Los Angeles High School 12 will open and relieve Belmont.

by 2010 - There are plans to reconfigure the existing Belmont High School into a 6-12 school.
