Phineas Banning High School is a public high school located in Wilmington, California and is one of the many schools that make up the Los Angeles Unified School District. Named in honor of General Phineas Banning who was one of the founders of Wilmington in the late 1800's, Banning High School offers secondary education for 9th through 12th grade students in a single track calendar year. The school's mission is basically centered in educating ethnically and economically diverse urban youth in critical thinking and problem solving, while also providing vocational and academic options to ensure a successful transition to the future as responsible adults.

History

late 1800's - Wilmington High School was founded.

1926 - The school was renamed Banning High School, in honor of General Phineas Banning who was one of the founders of Wilmington, when a newer facility at Avalon and Pacific Coast Highway was opened.

1971 - The ivy covered brick building suffered damage in the Sylmar earthquake.

1973 - Building was torn down.

1975 - After 3 years of holding classes in bungalows, a new building was finally opened on the grounds with a Lakme Avenue address. Along with the new building, a new gym and swimming pool were added to the campus.
